Mission & Initiative:
In 1997, the National Capital Coalition to Prevent Underage Drinking (NCCPUD) was created as an initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It is one of twelve coalitions around the country dedicated to preventing and reducing underage drinking.
With the help of teens (Youth Advocates) from various high schools in and around the Washington Metropolitan area, NCCPUD seeks to:
- Reduce both the availability and accessibility of alcohol to area youth;
- Reduce alcohol marketing and promotional strategies that target youth;
- Reduce alcohol impaired driving and support the enforcement of underage drinking laws in the metropolitan area;
- Develop and implement other promising interventions and policies that will help reduce drinking and the accessibility of alcohol to youth.
Legislative Developments:
On December 10, 2003, DC City Council passed Regulations to support the ABC laws that became effective in January 2001.
DC City Council Member has introduced legislation to ban the sales of 40 oz. Single items in Ward 4. (22oz./40 oz. Bottles)
Currently, NCCPUD has a partnership with local television station NBC4 http://www.nbc4.com/index.html. This partnership will flourish as we look to broadcast public service announcements about the importance of working to prevent underage drinking.
NCCPUD has achieved the acknowledgement of being a trusted "specialist" on underage drinking prevention by the DC City Council, ANCs, Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA)http://www.abra.dc.gov/abra/site/ , community agencies and businesses around the Washington, DC Metropolitan area!
