NCCPUD HELPS TO PREVENT UNDERAGE SMOKING

In June 2004, NCCPUD received a grant to assist the Department of Health (DOH) and Addictions Prevention Recovery Administration (APRA)http://dchealth.dc.gov/services/administration_offices/apr/services.shtm  to bring the city up to appropriate compliance with D.C. Law 8-262 to reduce the sales and accessibility of tobacco products to minors in the District of Columbia. With this grant, two programs were formed.

The first program was a Tobacco Compliance program. Ten NCCPUD Youth Advocates were trained on the tobacco laws and compliance regulation in the District of Columbia and on participating in undercover compliance checks.

Trained Advocates have been participating in compliance checks at local stores.

The second program created included 12 Advocates who were trained on tobacco laws, health consequences of smoking, and methods of bringing the community to compliance. The Advocates then created youth and merchant surveys which were distributed throughout D.C. The Advocates also prepared a 30-minute presentation that was performed at various recreational centers and camps in the District with children ages 6-17.

Advocate Arlette Thompson surveys along with other advocates on the street.

Advocates Nicholas Savwoir and Amber Dixon explain what is in cigarettes to a summer camp in DC.

The youth in both programs hope to have an impact on tobacco compliance in the District and to increase public knowledge on the laws.

NCCPUD Advocates participated in Tobacco Enforcement this summer.
